In the late 17th century, on a small, arid island in the Canarian archipelago, María, a teenage slave who believes herself to be of noble descent, works alongside her mother serving a marquis who has fallen from grace and is loathed by his people. When the marquis’s bitter son withdraws the protection that was keeping his father alive, and a severe drought grips the island, they must both fight to survive.
